Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Tags & Their Implication to Container Security by Joseph Benin, 13 April 2004.
From a security standpoint, the state of ocean container transportation throughout this nation and the world's ports is frightening. The challenge of protecting our harbors from attack is exacerbated by the complex coalescence of physical, political, and economic entities.
This paper surveys current proposals and looks at a technology presently being tested for use in securing sea-borne container trade:radio frequency identification tags (RFIDs).
By introducing the reader to the world of RFID, examining some of the technical aspects of the technologies encompassed, discussing two of the greatest technical hurdles to implementing this technology, looking at current applications of RFID, and surveying the future of this technology, it is shown that RFIDs are a valuable component of increasing the amount of use information available to law enforcement and strengthening the security of our ports, our economy, and ultimately our lives.
