Globalization, Innovation, and Development

The Globalization, Innovation, and Development (GID) program aims to nurture and sustain both long-term research and knowledge dissemination. The program explores interactions between the socio-political economy of science, technology, and innovation with international economic growth, entrepreneurship and development.

The first component of the GID program is the Invited Speakers Seminar Series. This is an Ivan Allen College-wide speaker series (now in its third year), co-sponsored with the generous support of the Sloan Foundation Industry Studies Program. The series engages Georgia Tech faculty and students with cutting edge research from a multi-disciplinary perspective, and encourages new research activities and collaboration. Participants in this series are both leading and promising researchers from the US and from abroad. Apart from their featured seminar, participants spend time at Georgia Tech meeting faculty and students — with the aim of seeding collaborative research and establishing an international network of committed scholars.

The second component of the GID program is a Fieldwork-based Research Initiative. This initiative explores the political economy of innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth around the world. Currently, teams under the supervision of Dr. Brenzitz are inquiring into how different political-economic models are translating innovation into local economic growth in countries from across the spectrum of development — from China and India, to Israel and Ireland, to the US and France. This work, which is deeply engaged with both industry and government, is sponsored by several grants from the Kauffman Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, as well as the Samuel Neaman Institute for Advanced Studies in Science and Technology at the Israeli Institute of Technology (Technion).
